SYNOPSIS

In this workshop we’ll pound the pavement, approaching subject matter in both conventional and unorthodox ways. Embracing the twin roles of chance and preparation, we’ll explore photographic layering, flash, lyric documentary, alleys, serendipity, panoramics, wrong turns, fluid situations, texture, and foliage, among other topics. The workshop is aimed at photographers seeking to expand their current practice into new styles and methods.

Starting with an evening introduction & presentation, the workshop will continue with shooting on the streets of Vancouver, exploring the technique, challenges & possibilities of photographing in both crowded & empty public spaces.

We’ll spend two full days photographing in a variety of locations, with hands on advice and assignments. Then we’ll spend the final day reviewing what we’ve shot, with helpful critique, editing, and suggestions for your future development.

Open discussion will happen throughout the workshop. The last review day will focus especially on:

Image composition, content review, and suggestions for improved seeing and shooting
Curation of images into a personal voice for each photographer, with an emphasis on personal storytelling
Project & photobook development
